| The Persuadem courses are
the product of many years of research and development by Paddy
Gormley in support of his teaching and writing. Paddy Gormley's
work is featured extensively on the internet, often in the form
of audio-visual presentations. The following selection of
links offers insights into the considerable breadth and depth of
his teaching resources. Click on any image for the corresponding

The Persuadem courses are partly
based on the premise that persuasion is
primarily emotional rather than intellectual. Paddy
Gormley's Writing for Radio Tutorials,
developed in 2006 in association with Women's
Radio Group and with the financial support
of Awards for All, include explorations
of a number of topics concerning persuasion and creativity. Specifically:
Tutorial 1, All in the Mind, considers the
relationship between intellect and emotions;
Tutorial 2, Subtext, shows how imaginative
thinking is invoked as our minds try to make sense of incomplete
information;
Tutorial 3, Creativity, is a practical
exploration of Paddy Gormley's model for the creative process:
the model is of fundamental importance to the Persuadem courses. |

Paddy Gormley developed about
sixty topic sheets for use in his Exciting
Writing classes for
adults.
One of his courses, Exciting Factual
Writing, is
particularly relevant here insofar as it sets out a detailed
understanding of the intellectual reasoning
processes that underpin persuasive communications.
Paddy Gormley's Exciting Writing website
includes copies of all the topic sheets used in the Exciting
Writing courses. |
Paddy Gormley has created a series
of 15-minute talks for radio on the themes of memory and the imagination.
The sixth talk in the series, Repetition
Reinforces Recognition,
available in full via the internet as a click-to-play
recording, considers the issue of persuasive
language from the perspective of the rhetoric of Winston Churchill
and Martin Luther King. |

Paddy Gormley's recent book,
Language with Altitude, features three
chapters on the subject of persuasive communications. These
include a review of rhetorical techniques from the perspective
of Paddy Gormley's thinking on analytical rigour, clarity, impact
and memorability.
The extensive audio-visual presentations on the Language
with Altitude website include a full chapter from the
book. The chapter, entitled Motivation, explains how
the emotions can act as a barrier to
even the most sensible proposals. |
